Workshop Frequently Asked Questions

Created by a professional team of educators and scientists, Mad Science workshops are designed to meet curriculum requirements and STEM objectives. Students have the opportunity to learn by asking questions, observing demonstrations and completing experiments. In addition, our programs have been correlated to match your curriculum requirements for every grade level!

For what ages are Mad Science workshops appropriate?

Our workshops are appropriate for children between 3-5 for Pre-K workshops and 6-12 for School-age workshops.

How far in advance do I need to book my workshop? What do I need to book?

We always recommend booking well in advance to ensure we are available to conduct your workshop during the desired time. If you are flexible with times and dates we are usually able to accommodate last-minute bookings for classes taking place the next week. In order to reserve your spot on our calendar, a $50 deposit is due at the time of booking. The remaining balance is due on the day of your program, and can be paid using your card on file.

What do I need to do to schedule a workshop for my class?

There are several ways to get in touch with us regarding workshop booking! You can fill out an online request form by clicking on the “Book a Workshop” button on our website, or contact our office staff directly at (303) 403-0432. If you have received an email about upcoming or featured workshops, you can also get in touch with our booking staff by responding directly to that email.

What kinds of things are taught in the workshops?

The exact activities and content for each workshop are specific to the topic of your choosing. Please click here to learn more about our workshop topics.

What time can I have my workshop?

Our workshops are available Monday-Friday during normal school operating hours. To avoid conflict with our after school programs, we usually try to schedule workshops no later than 1:00PM. To book a workshop at a different time or day, please contact our office.

I live outside the Denver/Metro area... can I still book a workshop?

Yes! We will travel anywhere to bring science to your school, though we do charge a travel fee if you are located more than 20 miles from our office in Denver. We will calculate the travel fee based on your distance from us. (NOTE: Our two most common travel fees are $75 for travel to Fort Collins and $100 for travel to Colorado Springs).

How many children can attend a workshop?

Our maximum class size is 25 for school-age workshops and 18 for pre-k workshops. If you have a much larger class, we ask that you schedule more than one workshop so that our instructor can effectively teach the class and have enough time and materials for all the scheduled activities. If time does not allow for two separate workshops, then we can send two instructors to run the workshops concurrently, however, the same-day discount will not apply.

When will the Mad Scientist arrive?

The Mad Scientist will arrive 15-30 minutes early to set up all the scientific equipment necessary for the workshop. If you have booked a workshop for the beginning of the day, please be sure the school will be able to let our Mad Scientist in when they arrive.

What kind of space is needed?

We ask that you have enough space for the Mad Scientist to set up on the table you provide and for the children to be seated comfortably in front of it. A standard classroom will usually be fine, but many of our workshops take place in libraries, media rooms, or auditoriums as well. Most of our workshops require access to water and electrical outlets, so please ensure these amenities are available at your chosen location.

How do I pay for my workshop?

When you book your workshop, you will receive an invoice of the amount due. Payment can be made by check, either mailed to our office or given to the instructor on the day of your workshop, or by credit card. We always recommend that schools explore a variety of options to finance our programs if the district budget does not cover the cost. Many schools have had success by collecting a small fee from each student, similar to a field trip fee. Other schools are funded by the PTA, or through fundraising activities the students participate in.

How will a workshop benefit me as a teacher?

Teachers do not always have the time and resources required to prepare interactive science programs. Mad Science’s experienced instructors come right into the teacher’s classroom with all the equipment, supplies, and staff. Our programs are fun, educational, and focus on real world science and engineering practices that work to reinforce science concepts and methodologies. We do not replace your teachers. Our role is to help them extend and enhance their impact in their class room by providing them state-of-the-art technology equipment to drive home the science concepts they cover in their classes.

How will a workshop benefit my students?

Children will learn about science by touching, feeling, and even sometimes tasting their science experiments! By creating an inclusive environment where learning is fun and "cool", and eliminating the idea of feeling shame for making mistakes, we leave students inspired and hungry to learn more, with increased confidence in themselves!
