(ENG) Mad Science Engineering Academy (ages 611)

Do you love to build, design and fix things? Put on your engineer’s hat for this exciting week of science activities. We’ll learn about catapults, bridges and domes. This camp is made up of the daily topics listed below.

(JRE) Junior Engineers

Shapes, structures, designs will all be explored during this day as a junior architect. We will study tension and compression. Which shape(s) make the best structures? Arches, bridges and domes will all be a part of this great day. We will design and create an arch, and build our own dome to take home.

(MAC) Machine Mania

Machine Mania introduces us to basic machines that help us with our everyday lives. Levers, pulley’s, hydraulics and pneumatics are all part of this day exploring physics. Inclined planes, catapults and micropincher devices will be constructed to help us solve problems presented throughout the day. We will review NASA robot programming concepts and work with a line tracker robot. It will all come to an end with our Mad Science obstacle course using what you have learned today.

(ELE) Electrical Engineering

“WattsUp?” during this day of Mad Science camp, you ask. It’s a trip down the super circuit highway. Basic electronics start the day followed with practical applications of electricity in circuits and motion, We will conduct conduct experiments experiments with the Van de Graaff generatorl. We will build simple circuits and study alternative energy sources. We will see if we can get electricity to move through water and see if we can solve the circuit maze.

(EL2) Electrical Engineering

On Part two of our journey down the electron highway, we will experiment with Magnets and alternative sources of power. We will see if we can defy g y ravit using a magnetic force. We will create our own electromagnet. Hydrogen, solar and wind are just a few of the alternative power sources we will work with today.

(BLD) Building on Earth

Today we look at how to build great structures on the different surfaces of the earth. For example, if we are building in a zone known for earthquakes, what changes need to be made to our design. Wh t a ab t ou b ildi u ng in the ocean? Wh t a if we have a spill in the ocean, how can we clean it up? This day is about understanding the structure of earth so we can build super structures on earth.
