The following are frequently asked questions about our Mad Science before and after school enrichment programs. If you do not find the answer to your question(s), please give us a call at 303.403.0432.
Where are Mad Science Before and After School Programs held?
Mad Science before and after school programs are held at the location listed at the time of registration. School programs are held on school grounds – no extra transportation is necessary to participate!
For what ages are Mad Science classes appropriate?
Our before and after school programs are appropriate for children ages 6-12, and our Pre-K programs are appropriate for ages 4-6. Our fall semester programs are open to grades 1-6, while winter and spring programs are open to grades K-6.
Are the students grouped by age? How do you teach your curriculum to multiple grade levels?
In most cases, all students are together in the same classroom. We then group the students together by age within the class -- siblings and friends may work together if desired. Our curriculum is specially designed to be flexible and adaptable, which allows our instructors to teach the topic to a wide variety of ages within the same class.
Our programs are taught workshop-style with the instructor introducing the topic to the entire class before having students break up by age to work on experiments and activities. The instructor then works with each group one-on-one to provide age-appropriate, in-depth explanations of the topic presented. Our programs frequently utilize the Montessori method, the use of stations and other teaching techniques to ensure all students -- from Kindergarten through Grade 6 -- walk away from the class feeling both challenged by the curriculum and encouraged to continue their exploration of science!
What do students do during a Mad Science class?
Our before and after school programs offer a combination of in-class discovery and exploration, as well as hands-on applications of the scientific principles presented. Students will watch exciting demonstrations and complete super cool experiments on their own to help them master the concepts they are learning. The precise activities your child will get to do depend on which program you register for. Regardless of which program your child participates in, you can count on their time with us being jam-packed with fun and science! Additionally, students will receive a take-home project as part of each class that helps reinforce the subject they learned that day.
How do I register my child for your program?
Please register online by following this link: Online Registration
*For schools taking their own registrations or those using a third-party provider for registration, please consult with school office staff to find out how to register.
Is there anything I need to provide? Are there any extra fees?
Unless otherwise stated, our programs are all-inclusive and all materials are included in the cost of registration. If an additional materials fee is required, this will be made clear at the time of registration. This usually only applies to Mad Science programs being hosted by a third-party vendor or an outside organization.
Who are Mad Science instructors?
Our Mad Scientists tend to be college students pursuing degrees in education or science or former/retired teachers. All of our instructors have experience working with large groups of elementary-aged children and have undergone extensive background checks including fingerprinting through CBI.
My child usually attends aftercare at the school. Can he/she still participate?
Yes! Simply select "daycare" as the pickup option at the time of registration and our instructor will make sure your student is escorted to the on-site aftercare program at the conclusion of the class.
My student normally walks home from school, can they be dismissed without a parent present?
Yes! Simply select "walk" as the pickup option at the time of registration and our instructor will allow your student to leave at the conclusion of class. Please note that our instructors will only allow your student to leave if you have selected this option or provide written approval for your student to leave unsupervised once the program has started. If another pickup option is listed on your registration, our instructor will not allow your student to leave until a parent, guardian or other adult you have approved for pickup arrives.
When and Where do I pick up my child after class?
Parents must be present to pick up their children promptly at the scheduled conclusion of class. A $60 per hour supervision fee will be charged in increments of 15 minutes if your child has not been picked up within 5 minutes of the class ending. Most schools have parents wait outside the main doors for pickup and the instructor will bring the students out to the front of the school after class.
Who is responsible for my child's attendance in the class?
Parents are responsible for their child’s attendance in all Mad Science Before and After School Programs.
Students tend to be forgetful, so please remind your child every week that Mad Science class will be held that day. If you know in advance that your child will be absent from class on any day during the program, please send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will communicate this to the instructor. Mad Science will attempt to contact you in the event of an unexplained absence -- but we are not responsible for your child's attendance in our program.
My child has allergies, other medical concerns or a disability. Can he/she still participate and how does your staff handle students with special needs?
We welcome any and all students who have a passion for science and desire to participate in our programs -- however, please note that our instructors are not trained to handle special needs. Additionally, our instructors are not certified to dispense medication and cannot administer medicine to students during the program.
If your child has a medical condition or disability, please communicate this to us clearly at the time of registration. We highly recommend making a follow up call to our office and discussing potential accommodations we can make for your student if necessary. In the past, many parents of children with special needs have provided us with tip sheets unique to their child, and our instructors have found this extremely helpful. We want our programs to be a great experience for every child in attendance, and the more information you provide us with the better chance we have of making that happen for your student!
I don’t see my child’s school listed. How can I get Mad Science to come to me?
Give us a call at (303) 403-0432 and let us know that you are interested in bringing Mad Science to your child’s school! If possible, let us know who the enrichment coordinator or PTA contact is and we will see what we can do to arrange a program.
If School Is Closed Due to Inclement Weather: If a class is canceled due to inclement weather or a school closure, we will attempt to schedule a make-up class. Office staff will inform you via text and email whenever a change to the schedule is made.
If Mad Science Cancels a Program: If we do not get sufficient enrollment to hold a scheduled before or after school program, we will communicate this to you via email as soon as the decision to cancel is reached. We make all decisions regarding before and after school cancellation by the Friday prior to the start of the class. Mad Science will offer to move your registration to a later session at the school or a full refund will be provided. Refunds are usually processed in 2-3 business days from the time of cancellation. Please note that refunds involving rebates and discounts can take longer to process.
If You Need to Cancel Your Registration: Cancellations communicated to Mad Science prior to the start of class will be provided a full refund less a $10 service charge. If you need to cancel your registration for any reason once class has started, this must be communicated to us immediately following the first class and before the second class, at which time a pro-rated refund will be provided. Please note that no refunds will be provided after the first week of class or if two or more classes have been attended by your student.
